Even
in Heaven Angels Sing the Blues
(For Willy Dixon)
When Willie went
to heaven
he heard a fellow say,
There ain’t no blues in heaven
cause no one goes astray.
“That’s ok,” said
Willie,
and he sat down on a star.
He broke out his harp
and strummed his old guitar.
He said,
“Let me clue you
in.
You be the one to
choose.
Even in heaven
angels sing the blues.”
Then Willie said,
“What did Adam
say to Eve when he and God conflicted?
He said, “Honey pack your bags we have been evicted.
When they marched
from Eden’s gate
They were the
first ones to be on section eight.
When Cain slew
Able, Adam was afraid.
Eve said “Honey
that’s how the blues are made.
Pharaoh had the
blues right up from the start;
Moses set a rift and
made the red sea part.
I asked a local
angel what songs he does cavort?
“Willie’s the
man—put blues on the report.”
I asked the angel, does your boss liked that?
The angel said,
“The boss he thinks it’s phat.”
You got Beethoven
and Mozart
for a stay;
You telling me
you prefer Billy Holiday.”
Now, I ain’t no
religious rock and roller
but angels love the blues like a dentist
loves a molar.
Let me clue you
in.
You be the one to
choose.
Even in heaven
angels sing the blues.”
