The Song That Laurie Sang

You’re getting heavy Laurie

for arms to hold you long.

As you sing within your crib

my heart is in your song.

Toddler steps and sleepy eyes

are beautiful to gage.

The thing that's gotten hold,

let's just call it age.

Father to daughter.

Broken cookie jar.

Simple days, pure ways,

wrapped around a star.

Age grows,

but forever I'll be young,

as long as I remember

the song that Laurie sung.

Letting go of you

is the final mark of truth.

An infant becomes a child.

A child becomes a youth.

What turns inside

as I watch you climb the stair

is to see your place in life

as I am momentary there.

How deep is the well of love?

Deeper than I know.

Green is the field of life

as I watch you grow.

A common thing in uncommon time

underneath the sun.

Your gift that I'll remember

is the song that Laurie sung.

Perhaps those of you with children can relate to this poem.

If so, then there is great joy in my heart.

I like it because it has a pure feeling.

Sentimental yes, but I think it has a universal quality that does not cross the line.

The poem was written a long time ago.

I’m glad to share it with you now.
